A dilated retinal exam is still recommended for all diabetic checkups (at least on a yearly basis) and medical office visits, depending on the reason for visit.
Zest by Zocular is an Okra (plant-based) eyelid treatment indicated for individuals with moderate to severe dry eye, blepharitis, styes, acute pain from ocular surface disease, and pre-op for glaucoma and refractive surgery, especially for individuals opting for premium intraocular lens implants during cataract surgery. Zest treatment is the only procedure that is able to deliver dramatic and immediate improvement within minutes without the use of any topical anesthetic that may disturb the ocular surface.
iLux is a minimally invasive solution that is FDA-approved to give relief from dry eyes. This innovative procedure uses gentle pressure and soothing heat to remove blockages from the meibomian glands. iLux is non-surgical and treatment usually takes only 10-12 minutes. The doctor places the iLux device over your eyelid and you will feel warmth and gentle pressure. The doctor will then remove any excess meibum oil.
Optilight is the only FDA-approved intense pulsed light treatment for meibomian gland disease. IPL is a drug-free, drop-free, light based therapy that has been used for 20+ years in dermatology to treat skin conditions but is now approved for treatment of dry eye. Optilight IPL reduces redness and inflammation around the eyes and face, which is what leads to dry eye/gland dysfunction. It is the only treatment that stops dry eye disease and meibomian gland drop-out, turning back the clock of the glands 15-20 years. IPL is a safe, non-surgical treatment that lasts only about 5 minutes. The therapy typically includes 4 treatments spaced out every 3-4 weeks and then maintenance treatments as needed depending on the individual/severity of the condition.
Myopia/nearsightedness control may be an option for your child if he/she has enough risks factors for developing significant nearsightedness or is demonstrating significant nearsightedness at a young age. Our office provides myopia control through either daily low dose atropine eye drops or soft multifocal contact lenses. Please call or visit our office if you are interested in more information.
Your reason for the exam, as well as the exam results determine whether your insurance company classifies the exam as routine or medical. A routine exam is defined by insurance companies as an office visit for the purpose of checking vision, screening for eye disease, and/or updating eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions. Routine eye exams produce a final diagnosis like nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia.
Cover routine vision care and are designed to determine a prescription for eyeglasses/contact lenses and screen the internal/external health of the eye in a healthy person without known eye disease
Provide coverage when medical conditions (i.e. diabetes) and eye conditions (i.e. cataracts, dry eye, glaucoma, macular degeneration) are present and requires diagnosis, management, and treatment as well as communication with another physician
A claim will be filed with your medical insurance and any co-pays and deductibles for that insurance will apply. Any non-covered service (i.e. refraction) must be paid out of pocket.
A refraction is the part of an office visit that the doctor uses to determine your eyeglass prescription. Vision plans cover both the routine eye exam and the refraction. Medical plans may not cover the cost of the refraction.
It is importance to realize that our office does not make these rules. They are defined by insurance companies. Your insurance is a contract between you and your insurance company. Not all services are covered benefits in all contracts.
Our office accepts select vision and medical insurances including Spectera/UHC Vision, VSP, NVA, VBA, Medicare Part B, UHC/UMR/All Savers, Humana, Cigna and BCBS. If we do not currently accept your insurance, we can provide you with an itemized receipt that you may submit to your insurance for reimbursement.*We accept most methods of payment including credit/debit, checks, and FSA/HSA accounts.*
Please note that out of pocket examination costs vary depending on the complaint that brings you into the office, if you have vision/medical insurance, and what the applicable copay/deductible may be. We will try our best to provide you with an estimate of your exam costs, but the final decision about the exam level will depend solely on the doctor's evaluation. Please provide us with your insurance information ahead of time, so we may check your eligibility and out of pocket costs before your visit.

For your convenience, we provide online forms for you to complete ahead of your appointment. Completion of online forms prior to you appointment will expedite your check in process.
Please give 24 hour or more notice for all appointment cancellations. This 24 hour or more notice may allow us to fill your appointment time with someone on our wait list. We understand that our patients are busier than ever and unavoidable conflicts may occur. However, as a courtesy please notify us as early as possible.
Our policy regarding cancellations within 24 hours or missing an appointment without notice is as follows:
First appointment missed:
No charge (However, scheduling for all future appointment will require a $20.00 non-refundable deposit.).
If you keep this second appointment:
Your $20.00 deposit can be applied to any charges you incur during your visit.
Compared to most healthcare offices who charge a “last minute cancellation fee” on the first occurrence, our office policy is very forgiving. However, we must consider the needs of our patients on our wait list.
Our office strives hard to see our patients in a timely manner. Therefore, if you arrive 15 or more minutes late, we may have to reschedule your appointment.
Please bring an insurance card to your appointment. Failure to provide this information may require payment for the full cost of the appointment at the time of service.
Please also bring your most current pair of glasses and if you have them, sunglasses. If you are a contact lens wearer, please bring a copy of your contact lens prescription and/or your contact lens boxes with you.
Before patients arrive in our office, we attempt to verify insurance coverage. If the benefits cannot be verified, the full charge of the visit must be paid before leaving the office. Although we provide this research as a courtesy, it is still the patient’s responsibility to check with their insurance plan regarding their coverage. Additionally, it is important to confirm that Dr. Schuster, with whom you have an appointment, is in network with your plan.
