One of the newest dry eye treatments available to patients is OptiLight. OptiLight is the only intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy to receive FDA approval for managing and treating dry eye syndrome.
Patients that have OptiLight receive four sessions, spaced out between 2-4 weeks. Each session only takes about 10-15 minutes to complete.
The treatment is applied to the skin below your eyes during the sessions and is not invasive. The certified specialists will cover your eyes with protective eye shields.
They will then apply a thin layer of coupling gel to the area you’re receiving treatment. During your treatments, you may experience a warming experience as you feel light applied to your skin.
OptiLight treatments are gentle, allowing you to return to your typical activities, including applying makeup immediately. Patients may start to see improvement by the second or third OptiLight session.
After receiving OptiLight, you might be able to reduce your dependency on eye drops. The treatment also targets multiple key contributors to the cause of dry eyes to give patients lasting results.
Part of the success behind OptiLight is Lumenis’ patented technology, OPT (Optimal Pulse Technology). It allows a highly targeted, precise, controlled treatment that helps stop the cycle of inflammation that many patients with dry eye syndrome suffer from. It targets inflammation by reducing contributors such as abnormal blood vessels and Demodex mites.
OptiLight helps return proper function to the meibomian glands and helps keep the tear film from evaporating too quickly. Not all patients with dry eye syndrome are suitable for OptiLight treatment, so talk to your eye doctor to learn more about your options.
Radiofrequency (RF) safely and effectively liquifies meibum within the Meibomian Glands to remove unhealthy oils and improve the tear film stability. Most patients describe the treatment as feeling like a gentle hot stone massage. As an aesthetic side effect, it also has skin tightening, wrinkle reduction, and collagen strengthening properties. RF may be performed as a standalone option or paired with OptiLight IPL.
Treatment Time: 15-20 minutes
Downtime: minimal to none
RF is a type of energy that is commonly used in medical procedures. In recent years, RF has been used for the treatment of dry eye, as it helps to improve the function of the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oily layer of tears. This oily layer of the tear film serves to prevent evaporation of the tears, otherwise known as evaporative dry eye (the leading cause of dry eye).
The RF handpiece is placed near the eyelids, and the RF energy is used to gradually heat the meibomian glands, which helps to unclog them and improve the flow of the oily layer of tears.
Studies have shown that RF treatment is a safe and effective way to improve the symptoms of dry eye, particularly in cases of MGD. In one study published in the Journal of Ophthalmology, researchers found that RF treatment led to significant improvements in dry eye symptoms, as well as improvements in tear film stability and meibomian gland function.
In addition to its therapeutic benefits, radiofrequency treatment also has several other advantages over traditional dry eye treatments. For example, it is non-invasive and does not require the use of medications or eye drops. It is also cost-effective and can provide long-lasting relief from dry eye symptoms.
Overall, radiofrequency is a promising new option for patients with dry eye and MGD. If you are experiencing symptoms of dry eye or have been diagnosed with MGD, talk to your dry eye specialist about whether radiofrequency treatment may be right for you. With its many benefits and high success rates, it may be just the solution you need to finally find relief from your dry eye symptoms.
30 million people in the US suffer from dry eye symptoms and about 85% of those individuals are reported to have meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Are you experiencing dry, itchy, gritty and/or watery eyes? Do you regularly use eye drops or have symptoms of dryness? Our office is proud to offer this new FDA approved non-surgical dry eye therapy that is designed to resolve the primary cause of dry eye syndrome. During your eye exam or dry eye evaluation, the doctor will gently press on your eyelids to assess the level and quality of meibum that is compressed. If healthy, the oils expressed from the eyelids are clear. In patients with MGD and blocked glands, the oils become progressively thicker and cloudier.
MGD is a chronic and usually progressive disease caused by inadequate quantity or quality of meibum (oils) released from glands in the eyelids when we blink. MGD occurs when the glands that produce the meibum get blocked or release poor quality meibum. This causes the aqueous/watery layer of the tear film on the eye to evaporate too fast. Although 50% of individuals with MGD don't report any symptoms, the following my indicate the presence of MGD, dry eyes, watery eyes, eye irritation/grittiness, and visual fluctuations. Many individuals with MGD try to treat the symptoms themselves with artificial tears/over-the-counter eye drops, which may not provide sufficient relief of symptoms and in some cases increase dryness/irritation if not used appropriately.
The new dry eye treatment, iLux, is a handheld device that uses light source heating and compression of your eyelids to help your meibomian glands express oils to protect your tears. iLux is the only handheld FDA approved treatment for MGD uniquely designed to customize treatments for each patient. Patients do not typically find the treatment to be painful or uncomfortable and describe it as a “warm eye massage”. The treatment lasts about 8-12 minutes, and typically eases symptoms for 6-8 months.
